Fig. 7

Chords are created from scales and for every chord there is a related scale. All the numbers used in designating a chord, 7th, 9th, 11th, 13th, and altered numbers b5, #5, b9, #9, #11 are derived from the location of each note in the scale. Any combination of notes from a scale, create a chord.

Examine [Fig.8] and you will see the patterns of scales and chords aligned. The chord forms are the squares and the circles add the other notes of the scale. This visualization gives you the patterns of chord and scale relationships. Scale and chord theory can become quite complex, but it is unnecessary to know the theory in order to use the patterns to create solos and chord accompaniment. Much of modern music; popular, rock and roll, country, folk, jazz, and all derivative styles is composed by musicians that have no formal knowledge of musical theory. It is also not necessary to read music in order to create it. What is necessary is a thorough understanding of the relationships between the scales and the chords. Study and visualize these combinations of patterns and you find all the ways these notes can be used.

Examine [Fig.11] and you see the relationships between the scales and the chords. These relationships are the “blue prints” of musical design and are all that is necessary to create and decipher music played on the guitar.
